Doonesbury and MIT I skipped 4 days of school to go to Seattle and Vancouver to learn about US and Canadian healthcare. (SEATTLE AND VANCOUVER RESIDENTS: did people ever tell you how pretty your cities are?!?!) I have about 200 pages of reading to catch up on. The last thing I should be doing is blogging, but hey, were MIT students, right? :D So youve probably heard of the comic strip Doonesbury. Basically, back in 2006, the author of the strip invited readers to decide which college the character Alex should attend. The people of today, raised by the sounds of The Beatles and Pearl Jam have forgotten all about the musicians that paved the way for these artists, and the musical styles that evolved into rock and roll, rhythm and blues and rap or hip hop. Unfortunately the music that once dominated the night clubs, restaurants, and radio stations is now heard only in elevators or when we go to a grandparents house to visit. The tone of the poem is strong and expresses different hardships that Maya Angelou has been faced with overcame. Angelou incorporates her past experiences, powerful views expressed in the tone regarding her pride, feministic values, strong confidence, and close ties with African American ancestry to create a timeline of events that have allowed her to push forward in life despite obstacles from her and her ancestor’s past and face future challenges with zero fear. Angelou incorporates her childhood and personal experiences with segregation in â€Å"Still I Rise† to show how the past does not define her, but influences her to become strong, successful, and accomplished . Mary Angelou grew up in Arkansas with her grandmother. She experienced racial discrimination while living in the south and was traumatically raped at age seven. Her first-hand encounters with racism and horrendous sexual assault at an early age fueled her to write this powerful poem. Growing up, she was treated unequally and saw how African Americans ere treated as inferior compared to the surrounding Caucasian race. â€Å"Still I Rise† is her way of proving that African Americans, like herself, have struggled for decades through a rough and strenuous path that has finally made them equal (Kite 1-11). In stanza eight she talks about overcoming pain and embarrassment left upon her race in the past. â€Å"Out of the huts of history’s shame/ I rise/ Up from a past that’s rooted in pain/I rise/I am a black ocean, leaping and wide† (Angelou 29-33). In these lines, Angelou uses a metaphor to show how despite a painful and horrific past, her and her ancestors have been able to rise above discrimination and act as powerful as an ocean. In the second, third, and fourth stanzas, she addresses her wealth. Despite obstacles, she was able to become a successful woman. She makes this point by saying â€Å"I’ve got oil wells† (7), â€Å"I’ve got gold mines† (19) and â€Å"I’ve got diamonds† to represent her stability and wealth as a confident woman. She lived in an era where women were not the sole income provider or out in the work force, so lines seven, nineteen, and twenty-two prove she has found her own personal wealth in her life and carries herself with pride for all her achievements. Angelou’s first-hand encounters and experiences in her life directly correlate to the tone of the poem and the forceful, emotional attitude expressed in each stanza. The tone of the poem is serious, yet positive. She takes her personal experiences and turns them into motivation and lessons that help her show that she will rise above and succeed in any challenge that she faces. Stanza six is specifically structured to emphasize the action verbs in each line. â€Å"You may shoot me with your words, /You may cut me with your eyes, /You may kill me with your hatefulness† (22-24). The actions of shooting, cutting, and killing are very abrupt yet painful processes. They are all one syllable verbs that were chosen specifically to represent harm done to the African-Americans. The harm that was done to her when she was a child is expressed in lines 25-28. â€Å"Does my sexiness upset you? / Does it come as a surprise,/ That I dance like I’ve got diamonds/ At the meeting of my thighs? †(25-28). After being raped and traumatized Maya Angelou apparently spent years as a mute (Kite 12). Once she overcomes her fears, she was able to show off her sexy and wealthy new life and confidence. Diamonds are very expensive and pure. This line can represent her worth and how she associates herself with a beautiful pure diamond. By incorporating past experiences, encounters with the treatment of African Americans, her self-worth, Angelou is able to create an emotional, passionate tone that reflects a timeline of events in history in the last stanza based on the structure and word choice. For example, â€Å"Up from a past that’s rooted in pain/I rise/I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide† (31-33). An issue or topic is presented, then â€Å" I rise† follows. Like a ladder, there are many steps in order to succeed. She is presented with one issue, faces it, succeeds, and then repeats the same process with another issue. Over time in history, Angelou’s African American ancestors crawled many steps along a ladder in order to rise above discrimination. The imaginary ladder and the ancestors who begin climbing are in pain and distress whereas the narrator ends up at the top of the ladder feeling hopeful and able to reflect on the lower steps of the ladder as lessons and achievements. The last three lines sum up the entire purpose of â€Å"Still I Rise† with the use of repetition. â€Å"I rise† is repeated three times in the last stanza and ten times overall in the poem. This repetition resembles a chant that Angelou recites to herself to remind her and the reader about her ability to overcome any challenge given to her and push forward into the future. This repetition also emphasizes how she is a strong, confident, proud African American. There is no one that will stop her from achieving and succeeding and she will continue to rise and be as powerful. Maya Angelou’s experiences growing up during a racist era in history and the struggles of her past African American ancestors contributed to the tone in â€Å"Still I Rise† which emphasized Angelou’s strong ideals and self-confidence. The tone of â€Å"Still I Rise† is powerful and allows the reader to understand how events in the past have inspired the narrator to be successful, pride, and hopeful. An emotional and eventful ladder was created in the last stanza to enhance the poem and show that each step of the ladder represented an event and an emotion that changed as each step was climbed by the reader and past ancestors. Wuthering Heights By Bronte In Bronte's novel Wuthering Heights the idea compensation for love lost is discussed. Wuthering Heights is a quiet house in the country where the Earnshaw's and Heathcliff live. Heathcliff loves Catherine Earnshaw very much but, she decides to marry another man, Edgar. Heathcliff marries Edgar's sister just to make Catherine jealous. At the end Heathcliff abandons his plan for vengeance and professes his love for Catherine only to see her die soon after. In the novel Wuthering Heights Bronte shows that revenge is not the key to happiness through irony, through plot, and through characterization. Irony is used over and over in the novel Wuthering Heights to express the notion of revenge. The main ironic incident in this novel is that no one ends up with the person they want to be with despite the fact that they can be with the one they love. For example Catherine loves Heathcliff. Catherine and Heathcliff are soul mates, and she even remarks to Nelly that, ? I [Catherine] am Heathcliff!? (142). She is angry at Heathcliff for not leaving sooner to make something of himself. Catherine could have had Heathcliff, but she chooses not to and ends up miserable. Another example of irony is that Heathcliff and Isabella do not love each other. Heathcliff thinks that he is with Isabella to get back at Catherine. He sees Isabella as an unsuspecting ?young lady?(91). However, Isabella married Heathcliff for spite. She resents the fact that her Catherine married her brother and wanted to get back at Catherine. Neither Isabella nor Heathcliff find happiness in each others arms, and they both die miserable and unsatisfied with each other. The fact that Edgar wants to get back at Heathcliff after Catherine's death is very ironic. Edgar won. Catherine marries him and not Heathcliff. Edgar is always jealous of Heathcliff. Before Catherine's demise Edgar tells her that, ?It is impossible for you to be my friend and his at the same time? (99). When Catherine does not p. 3 respond to this Edgar goes on to tell her, ?I absolutely require you to choose? (100). When Catherine does die Edgar seeks revenge. He knows that Catherine died of a broken heart torn between Edgar and Heathcliff. Edgar in a ranting rage tells Nelly, ?I'll crush his ribs in like a rotten hazel nut?(158). He seeks vengeance on Heathcliff, but never gets it. A final example of irony is with Heathcliff and Hindly. A few years after Hindly condemns Heathcliff to a life of servitude Heathcliff runs off and makes a living. He comes back a wealthy and proper man. Heathcliff helps Hindly out of debt. However, Hindly owes so much money to Heathcliff that Heathcliff takes Wuthering Heights from Hindly. So, just when Hindly thinks that he got back at Heathcliff for ruining his life Heathcliff takes his revenge and lets Hindly died a poor, miserable old man. The plot in Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights reflects the concept of revenge. Mr. Earnshaw meets a poor boy on one of his trips. Because Mr. Earnshaw is such a ?capital fellow?(9) he takes pity on the boy, Heathcliff, and invites him to live with the Earnshaw's. Mr. Earnshaw has an alterior motive for the boy. He wants his children, Hindly and Catherine, to understand what it is like to share their wealth with someone who is less fortunate than themselves. Mr. Earnshaw figured that the children would learn and grow from this experience. The truth is that the children did not. Hindly grows up miserable and resentful of Heathchiff. And Catherine eventually turned her nose up to Heathcliff only to find that she is cheerless without him. The novel takes a turn when Catherine has to decide whether or not to marry Edgar. She knows that she has ?no more business marrying Edgar Linton than I [Catherine] have to be in heaven? (64). Yet Catherine marries Edgar anyway for p. 4 wealth, but more importantly revenge. She wants to get back at Heathcliff for never making something of himself. But at the end Catherine is the one who suffers. Heathcliff desires Linton and Cathy to be wed. This plan is curtailed by Edgar. Cathy falls in love with Linton and tells Edgar. When Edgar finds out he says, ?No one from Wuthering Heights shall come here? (224). Edgar does this for revenge.
